A Study of Correlation between Social support, Stress and Burn out Levels among General Hospital Nurses

Abstract
In the intention of this study, with inquiring the type and the source of the support in a nurse and explaining the relatiohship among the social support, the-stress level and the burn-out level, as I identify what relationship to be there
between
the
social support and the stress level in a nurse, I intend to give basic data or to prevent the burn-out for a nurse and, nevertheless, to help to expose ways for it.
For the study, 148 nurses excepting OPD(Our Patients Departments) and Central Supply Room working at 2 general hospitals in Taejon had been censused from Aug. 19, 1991 to Aug.25, 1991.
To analize data censused, real numbers and percentages was used for general characteristics, average marks and real marks for all the variables, ANOVA test for the relationship between general characteristics and all the variables, Pearson
Correlation
Coefficient method for the correlationship among the variables and the hypothesis verification.
@ES Results acquired through this study are as follows :
@EN 1) The hypothesis verification :
The first hypothesis-the higher in the social supprt, maybe the lower in the stress level-was turned down(r=-.1591, p<.05).i.e. It showed that there is no statistically significant difference between the social support and the stress level.
The second hypothesis-the higher in the social support, maybe the lower in the burn-out level-was supported(r=-.3313, p<.01).i.e. It showed theat there is a statistically significant relationship between the social support and the burn-out level.
The third hypothesis-the higher in stress level, maybe the higher in the burn-out level-was supported(r.5468, p<.01).i.e. It showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between the stress level and the burn-out level.
2) To the social support in all the object, it was 419.82 in whole marks, 172.74 in standard deviation.
And results, identified from above result into 2 subordinate measures, total functional support were 302.55 in whole marks, 124.65 in standard deviation, the total social support network were 117.27 in total marks and 46.00 in standard deviation.
3) In stress level, with 5 as the maximum value, it showed 86.66 as a whole. And, to see the average mark in each stress factor, it was 3.33 in nursing, 2.98 in environment, 2.64 in personal relation.
4) In the burn-out experience level, with 7 as the maximum average mark, it showed 77.06 in whole mark, 4.32 in physical exhaustion, 3.43 in mental exhaustion 3.25 in emotional exhaustion.
5) There is no statistically significant difference in the relationship between the general characteristics and the social support level. The relationship between the characteristics and the stress level showed a statistically significant
difference in
(1) Age (F=2.45 P<.05), (2) Marital status (t=9.85, p<.01), (3) Term expected of working in a nursing(F=0.88, P<.001).
The relationship between the general characteristics and the Burn-out experience level showed the statistically significant difference in (1) Age (F=2.65, p<.05), (2) Term expected of working as a nurse(F=12.23, p<.001), (3) Presently working
ward
(F=2.37, P<.05).
